#18460 new defect

Windows 10 guest works very slowly. This defect appeared with 6.0.x versions.

Reported by: Vonkaz Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 6.0.4
Keywords: host CPU usage guest performance Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description

Host: Win10 Pro x64 1809 17763.316

Guest: Win10 Pro x86 1809 17763.316

Guest works correctly on 5.2.24.

This defect with guest performance appeared with 6.0.x versions.

I have tested on 6.0.5 revision 128999 test build because I previously created ticket #18319. The defect of serial ports has probably been fixed.

There is a performance problem with the guest machine. It utilizes 50% of host CPU (4 cores), the guest works very slowly. The log file is full of "TM: Giving up catch-up attempt at a "x" ns lag; new total: "y" ns"

The guest has a delay in every operation. Sometimes it freezes and suddenly unfreezes, makes some operations and freezes again.

Guest virtual hard disc blinks red/green dot on status bar most of the time but host hard disc is not active.

Solution:

  1. Disable 3D Acceleration
  2. Boot the guest
  3. uninstall guest additions
  4. restart, then shut down
  5. Re-enable 3D Acceleration
  6. boot the guest
  7. Reinstall guest additions.

This was not isolated to Windows 10 but also occured in a Windows 8 guest.

I am seeing very strange slow down of linux guest under windows 10 host with 6.0.5 (I was testing the experimental version to check whether the SCSI adaptor emulation no longer has the problem of faiilng to restart the saved image. I does not.

However, this slow down is a killer. I noticed the slow down after a reboot of windows 10 machine due to system update. I have reverted to 5.2.26 due to tis problem.

Is the steps mentioned comment 1 as a solution an official remedy for 6.0.x series?
