#18381 assigned defect

Certain sounds seem to crash OS/2 guest

Reported by: Rafcio Owned by: pentagonik
Component: audio Version: VirtualBox 6.0.4
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: other Host type: Windows

Description

I don't know if this defect is new to version 6, but I've just noticed that generating some sounds crashes the guest. In particular generating system error sound in rapid succession does that. For example trying to delete non-existing characters in system editor. The guest will lock up with sometimes partial error sound playing in the loop and the mouse cursor will disappear when over the guest window. Selecting machine close action will change the window to not responding state (message in the title bar) and the subsequently clicking on the close button will cause the guest state to show aborted.

did you install guest additions maybe the os is corrupted or a bug caused the os to stop functioning so maybe reinstall the os or try to make a new vm or reinstall virtual box.

I installed new guest additions and I doubt very much that there is any OS corruption. This started right away after I installed 6.0. I can go back to 5.2 to prove the point. Initially I thought that it was only certain sounds, but I think it's any sound especially if they are longer.

I think it's fixed now. I could play music, even continuous streaming music in 6.0.6 and it's still OK in 6.0.8. I didn't change anything, but installed version 6.0.6 and guest additions, so this proves that the issue wasn't with my client. This ticket can be closed now.

Sorry, I take this back. Streaming music is OK, but generating system sounds still hangs the client. It seems that repeatedly generating a system sound while the previous one is still playing has the most chance of causing the hang, but it's not always. Being persistent though will produce the "desirable" hang. Perhaps the "new" sound has to abort the playing sound at a "specific" moment for the hang to occur.

I've never tested an OS/2 guest so far -- so which OS/2 version is this exactly?

It's eComStation 2.2.

I believe I have the same problem with Oracle Linux 7.6 host and Windows 7 guest with VirtualBox 6.0.10. Certain sounds will cause a hang. I have not tried using an application to play sounds, but certain system sounds hang the system except the mouse is still repsonsive (it follows movement but clicking on anything does nothing). When the guest boots, the startup sound plays without issue. When I open a Cygwin xterm and cause it to ring the bell, the system hangs every time. When I look in the host, top shows one CPU pegged for the VM and I have to kill the process to recover. If I mute sounds in the guest, it still hangs. If I disable sound in the VM settings, the guest won't hang. I just upgraded from 5.2 yesterday where the issue does not occur, so I started having this issue almost immediately.

I believe I am able to reproduce the issue at will, how can I help to debug this?
