#18285 new defect

Cannot paste copied Chromium URL into Windows

Reported by: Aren Cambre Owned by:
Component: clipboard Version: VirtualBox 6.0.0

Guest type: Linux Host type: Windows

Description

If I copy the URL in Chromium's address bar on the Linux VM, I cannot paste it into any app on my Windows host. So far, all other uses of the bidirectional clipboard, either direction and with any application, works fine. Also, I can paste a copied Chromium URL into any other app on the same VM.

I have a Ubuntu 18.10 VM on VirtualBox 6.0 running on Windows 10 Pro x64 host. Running the release of Extension Pack that is for VirtalBox 6.0.0. In case it matters, I created this app on a 5.2 release of VirtualBox.

This seems like a VirtualBox bug because it only happens with a specific use of VirtualBox's bidirectional clipboard feature.

Are you "Sarke" from the forums? Did you also open the related discussion in the forums: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=91093. If not, take a look at it...

It's usually better and faster, if issues get first addressed in the VirtualBox forums, a lot more eyes there. More than 95% of the issues are resolved over there, which keeps the developers focusing on the bug fixes and enhancements, and there is no need for another ticket to keep track of.

For example, yours is a duplicate of #15960, as a result of changes in #15782, due to a crash as described in #16242.

Any news on this?

The other issues that are linked to in the previous comment are for 5.1, which did not have this specific issue.

See e.g. https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=91093#p437916 and https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=91093#p438689.

The forum also has some initial attempts at troubleshooting the issue.

Still nothing new on this topic? It's annoying me for month now. I can copy rendered HTML from the browser window of chrome in the linux guest and the formatting is also copied, when pasting in the windows host. But not the URL, that seems to erase the clipboard of the host, but the URL is present in the guest's clipboard.

I have the same problem. (Chrome runs in Ubuntu) When I copy the URL from chrome inside Virtualbox, I can't paste it in windows. My annoying solution is I paste the link inside a text editor and then copy the URL from the text editor and paste in windows... Please fix it as I am copying URLs between these machines all the time.

Same here. It seems like the when you copy the url in the chrome's address bar on the guest, it doesn't add an entry into the hosting window's clipboard. This is not an issue with the firefox. So, anything is so special about the chrome or the guest OS? My guest OS is Fedora 29.

Workaround: Start Chrome (and Friends) with --disable-features=OmniboxCanCopyHyperlinksToClipboard
