Not possible to change machine from VirtualBox main window while the machine is running — at Version 7

Description (last modified by Frank Mehnert)

When the machine is running it is possible to do many changes to it, such as:

  • Mount/unmount CD/DVD drive/image
  • Mount/unmount floppy
  • Add/remove shared folders
  • Toggle remote display state

If would be nice to have these control capabilities available from the application's main window. The novice user gets the impression that in order to do such operations to the machine he must shut it down first, then change it, and turn it on again.

It happened to me while installing the guest OS, that I had to mount a CD image, and I couldn't figure out that it was possible while the machine was running. I turned it off, mount the image, then turn it back on. It was very frustrating, and I thought to myself VMware is much better...'.

Hmm, I cannot follow you. Didn't you find the application menu of the VM window? Did you have a look at the Devices... section?

I expected (as a novice user) to have the 'Devices' section of the VM windows, which you mention, also available in the main application window, where the VM is shown with the 'Details' section greyed-out.

For example, I see:

CD/DVD-ROM Image gparted-livecd-0.3.4-9.iso

and I would like to unmount it, but I can not do so from that window, as it is greyed out. I must switch to the VM window, and do it through the 'Devices' menu.

This is annoying, but worse, this gives the impression that unmounting is not possible, because the machine is running, and then the (novice) user resorts to turning it off, and he gets angry :-)

Well, that all VM settings are not changeable during runtime is bug which will be fixed in later revisions. For instance, changing the network interface should be possible during runtime as well.

Apart from that I would suggest you to read the user manual before getting angry.

:-)

Usability is not an issue of RTFM. I just tried to make the application more 'inviting' for a new user.

Yes sure. But a GUI can not meet everyones association. Of course we try to make our GUI intuitive, therefore thanks for your suggestion.
