#17714 new defect

Ciritical Error during Windows Update (possibly VERR_PAGE_TABLE_NOT_PRESENT related)

Reported by: MJN Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 5.2.10
Keywords: windows 7 critical error Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Linux

Description

Host: Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS (Xenial) Guest: Windows 7 Professional 32-bit VirtualBox: Version 5.2.10 r122088 (Qt5.6.1) (Installed from the VirtualBox repository) with Windows Guest Additions v5.0.36

I am getting a 'Critical Error' when booting my Win 7 OS and it occurs when attempting to install a Windows update during boot time. I have narrowed it down to the '2018-04 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x86-based Systems (KB4093118)' update (I say narrow but there's 137MB worth of update in that so a fair amount going on).

I raised the issue in the forum and it was suggested that the presence of 'VERR_PAGE_TABLE_NOT_PRESENT' in the logfile (attached) *might* be a clue.

Yes, I know that MJN already included that info in the report (thanks MJN), but this post serves a dual purpose:

  1. Use the keywords that I search for in a ticket so that I can update the forum thread when there are changes, and
  2. Cc: myself.

It's funny MJN that you didn't get a "Guru Meditation" pop up. But at the point where you posted the screenshot, your VM is dead, long time dead, dead as a doornail dead. ;)

You should have seen something like that: https://www.google.com/search?q=virtualbox+guru+meditation&rls=en&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X

I did get the popup. The screenshot was just what VirtualBox captured for me (presumably the last thing it saw?).

As a workaround for others that might have this issue and want/need to get their OS working again if you boot in Safe Mode it (for me at least) ends up announcing 'Failure configuring Windows updates, reverting changes' and after some time reboots to give a working system once more. Any problematic updates can then be disabled in Windows Update whilst a permanent fix is (hopefully) found.

This has reminded me of the benefits of periodically taking snapshots of a working system!

Replying to MJN:

This has reminded me of the benefits of periodically taking snapshots of a working system''

Just don't start pilling them one after another. Read a draft about snapshots to understand a couple of basics at least...

I'm receiving this same error (VINF_EM_TRIPLE_FAULT) with the same "CPUM0: Disas -> VERR_PAGE_TABLE_NOT_PRESENT" (I'll attach the logs) guest Win7 Home Premium (SP1), host OSX 10.13.4, running VBox 5.2.10. Crashing started after updating Windows to the latest patch -- starting from an old working snapshot from Oct 2017 (which doesn't crash).

I uninstalled each of the applied patches in turn (KB4103718, KB4054518, KB4034664, KB4019265, KB4019264, KB4015552, KB4015549, KB3212646, KB3192403, KB3185330, KB4040980, KB4019990)... after each one was removed, the system would still "triple fault" when not running in Safe Mode. I finally got stuck on KB2952664... which appears to remain even after uninstalled (can't be uninstalled?)

I tried changing as many VirtualBox settings as possible, now on a single cpu, 2G ram system, but still crashes. Guess I'll have to stay on the old unpatched snapshot until the bug get tracked down...
