#17596 new defect

Critical Error occurs when trying to build Ubuntu 16.04.4

Reported by: runnerb0y Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 5.2.8
Keywords: Critical Error Ubuntu 16.04.4 Cc:
Guest type: other Host type: Windows

Description

VirtualBox allows me to create a new VM, but just a couple seconds after I point to the ISO for the start-up disk selection, I get a somewhat generic error screen. It's titled "VirtualBox - Guru Meditation ". It says "A critical error has occurred while running the virtual machine and the machine execution has been stopped."

I've used many other versions of Ubuntu and Linux on this Win10 host running VirtualBox version 5.2.8 r121009. I've downloaded this Ubuntu-16.04.4-desktop-i386.iso from several different sources now and they all yield the same result when trying to build a VM.

From your log:

00:00:09.893541 HM: HMR3Init: Falling back to raw-mode: VT-x is disabled in the BIOS for all CPU modes

Enable VT-x in your computer and the Guru will go away. Your i5-2520M CPU supports it, so it's a matter of enabling it.
