VirtualBox always crashes — at Version 2

Description (last modified by Frank Mehnert)

I have reported this before (#846) and it was reported fixed and closed. However, it is still happening in 1.6.2. As soon as I install Guest Additions it aborts. The System event log says

7026 The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to start: VBoxSF
7000 The [GuestAdditions] service did not respond to control request in a timely fashion
7009 Timeout waiting for the GuestAdditions service to connect

I have solved part of the problem. The reason was that I had no c:\Windows folder; it was c:\WinXP. This was because a long time ago I reinstalled Windows alongside c:\Windows and I had to call it something different, hence c:\WinXP. Gradually I moved everything over to c:\WinXP and deleted c:\Windows, and there it stayed. It suddenly struck me that this could be the problem, so I did another parallel reinstallation in reverse, and lo and behold it worked. From your point of view I suggest that where appropriate you use %SystemRoot% instead of Windows, and the problem goes away. However, having got past the GuestAdditions problem, I tried to add shared folders and VirtualBox aborted with the same message as before. Even when I removed the shared folders, it continued to abort. So I’m not all the way there yet.

I remove the pasted VBox.log file cause it does not contain useful information regarding this problem and it was ugly to read. Next time you provide a VBox.log file please attach the file and do not cut and paste the file content.

To understand your problem correctly: You are trying to install the guest additions within the Windows guest and the installation aborts, is that correct?
