#16721 closed defect (duplicate)

VMs with 3D acceleration enabled fail to start under 5.1.20 & 5.1.22

Description

I have been using the "Enable 3D Acceleration" setting for quite sometime without any major issues. When I updated VirtualBox to 5.1.20 it stopped working. Specifically, when I start a VM it immediately fails and reports the following error:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Debian.

The VM session was aborted.

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: SessionMachine
Interface: ISession {7844aa05-b02e-4cdd-a04f-ade4a762e6b7}

If I disable the 3D acceleration setting, the machine starts OK. 5.1.22 exhibits the exact same behavior. 5.1.18 on the other hand, works without any issue.

This appears to be a duplicate of #16693 and can be thus closed. I applied the proposed patch from that issue and it resolved this issue.
