#16489 new defect

Cannot set VM icon

Reported by: fletch Owned by:
Component: GUI Version: VirtualBox 5.1.14
Keywords: vboxmanage iconfile icon Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description

While reading the manual I came across the vboxmanage command 'vboxmanage modifyvm VMNAME --iconfile' According to the manual you can change the icon for the VM. I could not find anything else in the manual to emailed the iconfile specs (file type/resolution). I tried to run the command and gave it the absolute path to a 128x128 .png file but the icon for the VM did not change. Is there more information for the --iconfile command?

Indeed, it would be useful to be able to change the VM icon. This would help to distiguish between several VMs of the same system.

I also tried the --iconfile option with no success.

What is the expected image format ?

Well, the --iconfile does seem to "sort of" work for me. It adds an icon to the .vbox file and it does show the icon inside the VirtualBox Manager. However, what is missing and most needed is for the VirtualBox executable to use this icon when minimized in an application tray as opposed to just using the standard VirtualBox icon. Alternatively, telling the executable to not set an icon (perhaps --noicon) or to use a specific icon (--iconfile <icon>) might be alternatives since I usually launch my machines from a gnome desktop definition that already specified an icon to use or could easily supply an icon on the command line.

This appears to work in version 6.0!
