Description

While I was saving the state of a VM in fullscreen mode, I disconnected a host monitor (physically, by unplugging the video cable). The VM process crashed with the following error (translated):

Application Error : The instruction at 0x00000000775C4756 referenced the memory at 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF. The memory could not be read.

After that, the VM in the VBox Manager resulted in an "Interrupted" status.

Here are some useful details:

  • The host screens before unplugging were:
    1. Notebook native monitor
    2. HDMI external monitor, with fullscreen VM
    3. MiniDP external monitor, main host screen
  • The host screen after unplugging were:
    1. Notebook native monitor, main host screen
    2. HDMI external monitor, with fullscreen VM
  • Of course the host screen configurations before and after unplugging are as expected, including the fact that the main host screen switched from the screen no. 3 to the no. 1
  • All 3 monitors have the same resolution, 1920x1024
  • The VM has 2 guest screens, but only 1 was enabled
  • The VBox Manager was open but did not crash, i.e. only the VM process crashed
