#15905 new defect

Running Windows 10 as a guest in Xubuntu 16.04.1 host freezes the machine (3D-related)

Reported by: astraljava Owned by:

Guest type: Windows Host type: Linux

Description

While attempting to boot a Windows 10 guest on Xubuntu 16.04.1 host, as soon as the Windows logo and the dots running in a circle appear, the whole system hangs. Nothing can be done except pressing the physical power button to shut down the machine.

At first I thought this is related to https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/13795, but that ticket tells the problem has been fixed already for 5.0.2 and my version is 5.1.4 directly from vbox repository.

I found somewhere that adding nosmap to kernel parameters would work, and once I managed to boot the guest system up. Today it didn't help.

I'm attaching the VBox.log, hopefully it helps. In it you will see that guest additions are from an older version. The guest OS was used in an older version (Ubuntu repository version 5.0.24-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.1), but it shouldn't affect this as during the aforementioned time I managed to run the system, it informed me about this but didn't prevent the usage at all.

The really important information would be probably part of /var/log/kern.log. You also might want to enable the Ubuntu kernel crash dump mechanism so you have access to the kernel crash and the output of 'dmesg' taken during the crash when you boot the next time.

Hi, Same for me, with Ubuntu 16.04 64 bits host and windows 10 64 bits guest. My virtualbox version is 5.1.14 r112924.

Windows 10 guest runs a few minutes then the whole system hangs The first time it happens, my Ubuntu system hangs completely and refused to boot again. I had to reinstall it. The same windows 10 guest machine runs without problem on a windows seven 64 host with the same 5.1.14 windows version and the same vdi file. You will find the log file after the crash here attached(vbox.log.zip)

Still relevant with VBox 5.1.20?

Hi, I've been fighting this problem the entire day. And I downloaded vb today.

The system crashes regardless of 3d/2d or guest addition cd (altough without it it seems to take longer to crasch)

Pls mention if you need a log

elgrego, I would appreciate a VBox.log file of such a VM session. Please use the Attach file function.

Problem solved for me on 2 different computers running Ubuntu 16.04. First I upgraded to Vbox 5.1.22 and windows 10 64 bits guest was still hanging. Then I disabled 3D acceleration and now it works ! It hangs again if I re-enable 3D.
