Reported by: | JavaDev11 | Owned by:

Component: | guest additions/x11/graphics | Version: | VirtualBox 5.1.4 |
Keywords: | Windows Guest Video Playback 2x speed No Sound | Cc:
Guest type: | Windows | Host type: | Linux |
Description
Problem: With 5.1x if I play back a video in Windows 7 guest then it does not have sound and the video plays back at about 2x speed. This is true in several media players. Also, true in Firefox 47, 48 and Google Chrome 52. So this issue is systemic. Tried disabling 2D and 3D with the same issue. Went through several installs, cold power downs, reboots and many experiments.
Solution: Uninstall / Purge VirtualBox 5.1x and install 5.0x (5.0.24) and video playback and sound work properly.
Host: Ubuntu 16.04 with all updates Guest: Windows 7 sp1 with all updates Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 4GB Graphics Driver: 3.57 to 3.67 VirtualBox: 5.1, 5.12 5.14 Motherboard: ASUS Rampage V Extreme CPU: I7-5820K Memory: 64GB

Still relevant with VBox 5.1.6? In that case please provide the requested log files from comment:1.

Thank you for the information. I did do a complete uninstall and install of 5.1.6 and there are still sound issues. I believe that it has to do with the new qt5 and alsa+ICH AC97 used in my guests. I notice that if I play two or more videos then the sound is disabled. It was not playing back at 2x. Anyway, I reverted back to 5.0.26. When I get more time I will try again and send you the detailed logs as requested.

I have this exact problem with a Windows 7 64-bit host and Fedora 24 64-bit guest. YouTube videos play with no sound at an accelerated rate (possibly double, I cannot say, but certainly way too fast).
I also reverted to 5.0.26 which fixes the issue.
Please also see bug #15806 and #15840 which I believe are related.
On a Windows 8.1 host I had no sound, but didn't notice any speed changes. I reverted to 5.0.26 with that host also, and the sound issue was fixed.

Strangely selecting SoundBlaster 16 seems to fix the 2x accelerated video playback of YouTube videos in Firefox, but sound still doesn't come through.
Please try the latest 5.1 build from the Testbuilds page.
Scroll down to the Latest test builds / 5.1.x builds section and download the build appropriate for your host platform.
Could you please supply the verbose VBox.log file as shown here: Investigating audio problems
Thank you!
