Linux host hangs during compiling

I'm compiling LibreOffice on Xubuntu 16.04 guest machine and sometimes (3 freezes - 6 compilings) guest machine freezes. Guest machine is allowed to use 2 cores. I have AMD Phenom II with 4 cores. Host machine - Linux Mint 17.3 (based on ubuntu 14.04)

When your guest freezes: I guess the guest screen completely freezes. Are you able to power-off the VM in that case?

I am experiencing the same issue (since 5.0.20 if I recall correctly). I am using Kubuntu 16.04 guest for compilation on Windows7 VirtualBox host. It freezes mostly when compiling using all resources. In most cases using previous version, guest machine was not frozen completely - only gcc compiler was not responding and I had to kill all instances manually (also there was high kernel CPU time from these processes)

With current version it was frozen completely -> guest was not responding to shutdown signals, but power off was immediate.

Attached minidump of VirtualBox.exe process was created few minutes after guest machine stopped responding.

yanp.bugz, is this a 5.0.22 regression for you? If so, could you test this test build to check if the problem is gone?

Sorry for the late responce. This bug tracker didn't email me... Is this fix included in 5.1? I guess I'll install 5.1 and will continue working. Unfortunately there are no clear steps to reproduce.

By the way machine was freezing completely, only reload helped

Please clarify: Is this problem reproducible with VirtualBox 5.1.2 or only with VirtualBox 5.0? And please attach a new VBox.log file for VirtualBox 5.0.26.

Hello, in my case (Windows7 host machine) it is reproducible also with 5.1.0 and 5.2.0.

The more threads I use to compilation, the faster it freezes. In my case, virtual machine has 8 physical cores, and it freezes even when compiling using 4 threads (make -j4).

Sometimes I can see that before machine is completely frozen, worker threads (= spawned compiler instances) are in strange state - almost completely in kernel and blocked on disk I/O operations. When I kill such "stuck" compiler process, resulting object file is mostly corrupted. I am using gcc+ccache to compile my projects which produces even more disk IO operations as is normal.

ubuntu 16.04 freeze with vb 5.1.6

I have a similar problem. It happens in 5.1 versions also. I managed to rectify the issue by changing the OS type to Other 64bit. But I think the issue is related to paravirtualization using KVM when Ubuntu64bit is selected (it appears to select 'none' when other64bit is selected) Now I am testing with paravirtualization set to 'minimal' to see if my theory is correct. I attached a vbox log file from 5.1.6 version.
