Windows guest freezes upon booting
Reported by: | Adam Flott | Owned by: | |

Component: | other | Version: | VirtualBox 5.0.2 |
Keywords: | Cc: | ||
Guest type: | Windows | Host type: | Linux |
Description (last modified by )
After upgrading to 5.0.x my Windows host no longer works.
The book process starts, then the Windows graphics freezes on the loading screen and the OS remains unusable.
This shows up in dmesg
[112985.894050] vboxdrv: ffffffffa0af7020 VMMR0.r0 [112986.017386] vboxdrv: ffffffffa0a27020 VBoxDDR0.r0 [112986.018570] vboxdrv: ffffffffa0006020 VBoxDD2R0.r0
I have re-installed all the related packages and rebuild the kernel modules, but the result remains the same.

I tried another guest (Linux) and was able to boot properly (and the malfunctioning VM can boot into safe mode), so it appears VirtualBox is functioning as it has always has for me (perfectly). Go ahead and close the ticket as I can blame Windows for the lack of booting properly.

Thanks for the information.
According to your description and the VBox.log file your host is Linux and your guest is Windows. The host kernel messages (vboxdrv:...) are informal and harmless.
So far I have no idea why your Windows 8.1 guest would not boot. Any change if you boot your guest in "Safe Mode"? Also, which was the previous version of VirtualBox you used to successfully boot this guest.
