Virtualbox refuses to start due to an assertion error

Description
Everytime I start virtualbox I get the following error:
Assertion failed: [VBOX_SUCCESS (vrc)] at '/home/vbox/1.5-lnx-rel/src/VBox/Main/VirtualBoxImpl.cpp' (1699) in virtual nsresult VirtualBox::GetExtraData(const PRUnichar*, PRUnichar**).
VERR_OPEN_FAILED (-101) - File/Device open failed..
