#13862 new defect

Sound not working 4.3.22 windows xp guest, windows 8.1 host

Reported by: Astrogirl Owned by:
Component: audio Version: VirtualBox 4.3.22
Keywords: no sound in guest xp Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description

HI many others also reported on forum that sound that was working has stopped in newer version. I tried reinstalling drivers, installing downloaded driver, reinstalling guest additions, installing K-lite codec pack, checking all volume controls not muted. Also uninstalled, rebooted and reinstalled host sound drivers. In meantime will be downgrading to older 4.3.20 where was working sound. Host sound works well through speakers. Please fix soon as prefer to use current version.

Astrogirl Sound Issues 4.3.22 Windows

comment:1 by Astrogirl, 9 years ago

Vbox Log files attached - correction also to above - 2 others have reported so far same issue. I am on Windows- XP guest on 8.1 host Seeing this in settings file/log 00:00:16.527425 Audio: Trying driver 'dsound'. 00:00:16.757013 Audio: set_record_source ars=0 als=0 (not implemented) 00:00:31.166535 DSound: create capture buffer E_FAIL

not sure what means though.

Sorry forgot to state also I am using ICH AC97 in settings with Windows Direct Sound- tried sound blaster too but no audio controller and therefore no driver gets detected in device manager. The ICH AC97 default one is what had in 4.3.20 version and before.

If I change to Intel HD Audio setting I get yellow check mark with Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus in device manager and and am trying to locate a driver on internet for this to see if works. What version number is better one to get?

Of these not sure what is best for XP SP3 guest with some software using hardware acceleration and 3D graphics. Any suggestions?

Please get debug log:

1) Open 'Control Panel/System/Advanced system settings/Environment Variables' on the host and create a new system variable with name VBOX_RELEASE_LOG and value +dev_audio.e.f.l2

2) start the VM, try to play a sound in the VM, then shutdown the guest.

3) attach VBox.log to this ticket. The log should contain more "DSound: ..." lines.

Thanks!

Furthermore: Downgraded back to 4.3.20 and got weird pcm audio error re host -did not get with other versions but after reboot audio was ok similar to what other people have posted here is output of error and same was in logs:

00:00:11.543582 Audio: Trying driver 'dsound'. 00:00:11.672773 Audio: set_record_source ars=0 als=0 (not implemented) 00:00:21.719226 AC97: WARNING: Unable to open PCM IN! 00:00:21.719277 AC97: WARNING: Unable to open PCM MC! 00:00:21.719309 VM: Raising runtime error 'HostAudioNotResponding' (fFlags=0x0) 00:00:21.719335 Console: VM runtime error: fatal=false, errorID=HostAudioNotResponding message="Some audio devices (PCM_in, PCM_mic) could not be opened. Guest applications generating audio output or depending on audio input may hang. Make sure your host audio device is working properly. Check the logfile for error messages of the audio subsystem"

Anyone know what causes this and how to avoid?

Just wondering also if this may be cause of no sound in later versions 4.3.22 and above but with no error message?

If I keep getting this issue and lose sound I think I may try uninstalling all host drivers, reinstalling and see if fixes as had to do same with my host network drivers recently with update of virtual box.

On my system I get no sound if loads with this error.

Unfortunately the log (AstrogirlVBoxSoundLog2.zip) does not contain debug information, which means that the environment variable was not set correctly. Please try to set it correctly again as described in comment 3 and then get the debug log. Without such log it is difficult to say what is wrong.

VirtualBox 4.3.20 warnings like "WARNING: Unable to open PCM IN!" mean that audio recording device is not available on the host, for example microphone is not connected. VirtualBox 4.3.22 can still work in this case and will allow to record audio when a microphone is connected later.

Ok attached is new set logs -could not find any though with name of VBOX_RELEASE_LOG.log in program folder or log files path. Sorry took a while, this is now done on 4.3.24 version -still same sound issue -no sound though sliders, device manager all show no errors.
