Try this:
1. Create a new VM.
2. Tell Virtualbox the guest will be a ""Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks (64 bit)""
3. Finish creating the VM...
4. When done, open the VM settings and look in System / Chipset.

Current results:
* The VM has gotten an ICH9 chipset and can't boot.

Expected results:
* The VM should have gotten a PIIX3 chipset with which the OS can boot.

I did get a working VM eventually by following these instructions:

Also, the ""Guest type"" field in this bug tracker doesn't contain any ""OSX desktop"" field so I choose ""other""."	defect	closed	other	VirtualBox 4.3.14	duplicate			other	Mac OS X
