USB Devices Not Recognised in all Guests

OSX Mavericks Host Virtual Box 4.3 Windows 8.1 Guest Ubunto 13.10 Guest
I have tried to connect 3 different USB drives (4gb Thum drive, Corsair 32gb USB and WD 2Tb ext HDD) and a mobile phone (Galaxy Note 3) to either of my Guests but it does not work.
VB recognises the devices and attaches them, when either guest is launched the devices are connected and ticked as though available but the guests systems do not recognise the devices.
In W8 specifically the error comes up saying device not recognised 'Invalid device description' for any of the drives.
