Very slow performance when using multiple cores

Description

Hi,

I am trying to use Virtualbox to run a Windows Server 2012 guest on a Windows Server 2012 R2 host, which has two 6-core xeon processors and 64Gb Ram, with 2 seagate constellation disks in RAID 1.

We have moved over a VM from our desktop (core i7) environment as a test, where it works fine with 4 cores set, and the VM runs incredibly slowly when given anything more than 1 core for its number of CPUs setting. I have attached a log files of 1core and 6core startup/shutdown of a standard Windows Server 2012 install with MS SQL as an example. The 1 core machine boots up in about 15 seconds, whereas the 6 core version takes well over 2 minutes, and then is still slow once startuo completes. Does Virtualbox have an issue with this type of CPU and multiple processors? It is affecting our ability to use it as a development environment

It seems that this multiple-CPU issue has been around for years. I am too having the same issue, on Windows 8.1 64-bit machine running on a Mac Pro Host machine w/ OS X 10.9.4. I had this same issue over 2 years ago with VirtualBox 4.1, then w/ 4.2, and still with 4.3.16. When is this going to ever be resolved!?

I use VirtualBox 6.1.16 on Windows 10 20H2 to run dev VM downloaded from Microsoft(win10), on intel i7-10700 with 16 cores. VM is configured with 4gb ram, other settings seem to not matter, eg paravirtualization interface, chipset or ram. There is no paging file. Visual settings are set for performance. Search indexing turned off. Windows defender turned off. If VM is started with 4 "CPUs" then it is very responsive. If 8 CPUs - quite slow, eg you have to wait for Start Menu to open. Or you have to wait for menu to appear after you click on taskbar.
