Windows 8.1 + VirtualBox 4.2.18 - Cannot Upgrade - Not Network/Internet

Description

I am unable to update VirtualBox 4.2.18 on multiple Windows 8.1 computers. When I attempt to install 4.3.6, the Windows 8.1 computers no longer have access to the network/internet. I have attempted to resolve the issue in the following manner:

  1. First install the update as normal simply using setup and installing.
  1. Second, I have tried uninstalling/rebooting and then installing using setup.
  1. I have tried uninstalling and then going directly to setup to install.

In all instances, the installation states Successful and to click Finish. Immediately, I no longer have access to the network/internet. Rebooting the computer does not resolve the issue. I see other tickets that are more than 6 months old outlining this exact same issue involving Windows 8.1. I do not see any provided solutions to this issue. Hundreds of people are likely encountering this issue. If you could please provide a solution. It would seem to me the issue involves the virtual network adapters not being properly uninstalled/upgraded.

To resolve this issue, I have to perform a Windows System Restore prior to attempting to upgrade Oracle VirtualBox to 4.3.6 and everything goes back to working properly.

I would like to add that I have also tried unchecking VirtualBox Host-Only Networking when installing 4.3.6 and it results in the same issue.

I have also tried installing 4.3.6 by running the setup locally on the C Drive and over a UNC network which also results in the same issue.

It is also worth noting that OracleBox does not like being installed over a network path. When you attempt to uninstall the product, the uninstall fails because for some reason it is looking for the original setup file. I have no idea why this would be the case - no other programs in Windows look for the original setup file when performing an uninstall.

The reason for this problem is that VirtualBox still uses NDIS 5.x network drivers for host-only networking and furthermore Windows 8 introduced some undocumented changes which we are trying to debug. Migrating to NDIS 6.x is planned but is some work.
To work around your problem I suggest you to completely uninstall VirtualBox, then reboot the host and then install VirtualBox 4.3.6 without host networking. It might be also necessary to run a cleanup script -- please tell me if you still have no network even if you uninstalled VirtualBox and rebooted.

As stated in the original post: Second, I have tried uninstalling/rebooting and then installing using setup.

Where do I obtain the cleanup script you mention?

This issue occurs on clean installs of Windows 8.1 that have a previous version of VirtualBox installed. The issue specially involves upgrading from a previous version of VirtualBox to VirtualBox 4.3.6. The previously installed versions of VirtualBox do not exhibit this issue. The issue only appears when attempting to upgrade to VirtualBox 4.3.6.

I've attached the script. I hope it is useful and will repair your Windows networking but we cannot provide any warranty that this script does not cause any harm.
