 So there is something in the "autorun" environment under GNOME which I don't understand at all which is causing the problem.
+From the command line as root the following works properly giving intended 775 permissions:

+However, if I repeat that as a normal (unprivileged) user, I get a GUI dialog box asking for root password, and after I enter it, installation with the 770 permissions.
