Install Makes Windows 8 Host Boot Fail

Reported by: jmessenger235 Owned by:
Component: installer Version: VirtualBox 4.2.12
Keywords: Windows 8 Host Boot Hangs Fails Cc:
Guest type: other Host type: Windows

Description

This is bug: When I run the Virtualbox 4.2.12 install with its default settings, Windows will not finish booting on the next start up. I'll leave it try to boot for a while, kill the power, start it up and repeat until the Windows 8 auto recovery kicks in. Windows 8 will do a system restore t the point just before installing Virtualbox. Virtualbox will no longer be installed and the system will reboot and operate normally. I ran the whole install Virtualbox, system repair cycle several times to confirm nothing else I did was tied to the problem. I eventually installed Virtualbox by not installing anything that looked like it was related to networking. With that install configuration Windows booted properly several times. I ran several clients in Virtualbox and they all were able to connect to the internet.

Machine Information: I am running Windows 8 x64 as my host. It is not an upgrade. I did a fresh install from CD, though I have since installed numerous other items. The laptop runs an AMD A8-4500, has 16 GB of RAM, and a sizable SSD. Because I develop for windows phone, I have hyper-v enabled and it has several network adapters setup. I use Virtualbox because hyper-v is inadequate for some things, so I have to have them both concurrently. I had previously used them concurrently without issue, but then I kept running into wireless networking issues (no internet access over WI-FI) definitively caused by Virtualbox somehow. As such I had no choice but to uninstall Virtualbox (though Windows seemed not to remove all of the settings related to Virtualbox's network adapter) and to start using hyper-v in its place. Hyper-v was inadequate in some regards, so I installed Virtualbox 4.2.12 and got the above bug.

If I can help fix this issue or provide any useful information, even if it means retesting that whole mess installing nightly builds or anything else, please let me know as I am more than happy to help! I can be contacted directly if needed at [reportedbyname] {A T} [gmail address]

Oh my god thank you so much for this bug description. I ran into the exact same issue on Friday and spent several hours trying to find what causes the Windows 8 boot failure. I installed VirtualBox 4.2.12 at work and my workstation is non-functional since then. For some reason it is not able to automatically recover. I have a similar setup like you. I will try to boot into safe mode to uninstall VirtualBox tomorrow. This is a critical bug!

The uninstaller does not run in Safe Mode, so I had to use 'Autoruns' by sysinternals to manually remove the vbox* sys driver files to make my machine boot again.

I hope this bug is going to get fixed soon so I can use VirtualBox again.

Same for me here. Any progress on this bug?

I just ran into the same issue: a healthy Windows 8 install fails just after upgrading VirtualBox to latest release. Had to do a system repair in order to get Windows 8 back on track. VirtualBox had been a favorite for a long time because it is free... but being free doesn't mean that software can be unreliable. Oracle must fix its installer and ensure that all commercial versions of Windows currently being sold do not fail this way when installing the product.

I experience the same problem.
Everything is fine with version 4.2.4.
When upgrading to version 4.2.16 my host PC Windows 8 doesn't want to boot anymore.
I've found that the problem is solved when disabling everything in the Startup tab of the Task Manager.
I've disabled the following:
Adobe Reader and Acrobat Manager
Apple Push
Dropbox
hkcmd Module
igfxTray Module
iTunesHelper
Java(TM) Update Scheduler
Microsoft Office 2010 component
persistence Module
WD Drive Auto Unlock
WD Quick View

So one or more of these programs in combination with Virtual Box version 4.2.16 is preventing that the PC can boot.

Today I have experienced same issue with similar software configuration.

I could not start my Windows 8 64 bit after Virtual Box 4.2.18 installation. Happily, the automatic Windows repair reversed changes and uninstalled Virtual Box.

I am not sure, but I reckon that the problem was caused by the Visual Studio for Windows Phone and its network adapters.

Have someone managed to install Virtual Box next to Visual Studio for Windows Phone?

Thanks a lot dear Oracle that almost 2 years after the MAJOR bug like this has been reported it is STILL not fixed.

Ran exactly into the same issue while updating 4.3.20 to 4.3.22 on Windows 8 64-bit host. Right after updating to 4.3.22 (prior to rebooting the pc) - no network connection is available, repairing network connection doesn't work. After rebooting: network connections are still not available, login screen is shown but no login is possible as windows hangs while logging in.

The only way to get the system work again is to start the repair and go back to a restore point before the virtual box update.

Thank you Oracle for stealing an hour of my life.

Nonetheless let me know if and how I could help you to fix the bug.

Please, provide more information about your case - vbox logs or windows logs or vbox installer logs if you have. please, run windows registry, go to "HKLM\CurrentControlSet\System\Services\NDIS\IfTypes\6". Look into a key "IfUsedNetLuidIndcies". What is the value of this key?

The same happend to me today - even with the newest version "4.3.26" downloaded from the website.

I am running a Windows 8 64bit Professional Edition. VisualStudio 2013 and Hyper-V are already installed.

It's possible to use virtualbox after the installation - but after the first shotdown-restart of my Win8 Host machine these error occures. --> endless startup time --> windows restore point
