#11677 closed defect (obsolete)
Fedora Guest does not auto-resize to window size after initial start-up
Reported by: | Quickbooks Office | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | guest additions | Version: | VirtualBox 4.2.10 |
Keywords: | Cc: | quickbooks.office@… | |
Guest type: | Linux | Host type: | Linux |
Description
Fedora Guest does not auto-resize to window size when starting up.
You have to do CTRL+F to make it go full screen, which then triggers the auto-resize function and makes the Guest full screen.
Pressing CTRL+F brings you back to 'windowed mode' but this time it is sized properly.
Expected results:
When the Virtual machine is started it should automatically resize to the whatever size the window is, for example if the window is maximized etc.

Is what you mean that until you do Ctrl+F the guest doesn't follow when you resize the host window? And could you please add a log file for the virtual machine?
No the guest needs to start auto resized in the window.
I have to force it to auto resize via Ctrl+F by forcing it to go full screen which forces the auto-resize function. Then another Ctrl+F it resizes to the window screen size.
The initial start up is not auto-resized.
Windows guests on the other hand auto-resizes to window even on the first start up (after the window logo).

So is the guest resolution different to the host window size? And do you try to resize the host window manually (e.g. by dragging it) before doing Ctrl+F? The log file suggested (correctly?) that you didn't do that at least this time.

No the Window overlay starts up maximized automatically (probably because I left it maximized before shutting down). But the Fedora Guest does not automatically fit to the window size. To see difference when you boot Win XP or Win 7 with Guest Additions they automatically resize to the window size (maximized) without having to force it to go full screen and back to window size.
Oh and I am using Fallback mode in Fedora 18 Guest.

I am attaching another log file using 4.2.12 click the maximize button twice so that it resizes to the 'windowed size'.
I guess you can either click the maximize button twice or do ctrl+f twice.

Sounds very closely related (if not identical) to an issue under discussion on StackExchange, which has a video repro:
I'm still trying to isolate the failure. It appears to have to do with having a new VM, or a clone of an existing one. It seems to be new sometime since Nov 2012. When I get more info, I will open a new bug instead of continuing to speculate here.
Hope this helps!

I think the above question at the website you have linked is mistaken. The problem with Windows guests auto-resize problem started with 4.2.12 Guest Additions.
So I downloaded http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.2.10/VBoxGuestAdditions_4.2.10.iso .
Uninstalled the 4.2.12 guest additions, rebooted and installed 4.2.10 Guest Additions on all my Windows Guests. The auto resize problem for Windows Guests went away.
I haven't registered in the Forums yet, or I would have posted in this thread https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=55187 that downgrading to 4.2.10 Guest Additions works for me, as I had the same problem in first post.

Please reopen if still relevant with a recent VirtualBox release.
