VB 4.2.8.0 aborts upon taking snapshot with Windows 8 Error code 1000

Part way through an attempt to take a Snapshot, the VB Guest will be terminated abruptly. The host OS is Windows 8 Pro 64-bit. The Windows 8 Application Event Log reports event Error 1000. This is a consistent failure. The description of this Application Event Error is:
