Compacting a writethrough or multiattach disk makes the virtual machines inaccessible

Description

  1. Edit and then zerofree a writethrough or multiattach disk
  2. Do not detach from machines
  3. VBoxManage modifyhd --compact
  4. Open VirtualBox. The machines have become inaccessible. showhdinfo reports that the disk is now in normal mode.

Whenever you do hdinfo or modifyhd --type, and open VirtualBox within 5 seconds, the machines will be accessible. If you do hdinfo or modifyhd --type, and open VirtualBox after 5 seconds, the machines will be inaccessible.

Cloning the disk makes it (the original copy) accessible again.
