Display issue with WinXP guest after 4.2 upgrade

Description

Host: MacBook running MacOS 10.6 Guest: Windows XP-SP3

I have my MacBook connected to an external monitor running a split display. When I boot my Windows XP guest in the second display, it appears the graphics buffering isn't right. Most of the screen will show black while the preview window in the VBox (on primary display) shows the normal display. If I refresh the XP desktop it will show the entire display but parts of the desktop start turning black very soon. It's like the display isn't showing the correct layer in the FB?

Move the guest window into the laptop display and all is good. Configure external display to be a mirror and all is OK. This started when I upgraded to 4.2. It was that way before I upgraded Guest Additions on the guest (upgrading the guest additions did not change behavior).

I just came across the same issue with Snow leopard with Windows 7 and linux guests.

I am running into the exact same problem with a XP-Guest since upgrading vb to 4.2 on my 10.6 MBP. Tried all 4.2 versions all the way to 4.2.4 with various client-tools variations. Only downgrading to latest 4.1 fixes it so far. On my other Macbook, running 10.8, I don't see such problem at all.

I found an interesting workaround. By default I was using the 2nd monitor's same-named display profile, "DELL 2208WFP". I found if I switched to one of the profiles named simply "Display" I didn't appear to have a problem. I then created a new calibrated profile and it appears to work too. I haven't had a problem since.

Scratch that :(. It's better but still not perfect. If I move the windows around and switch between them (I run two virtual machines), they don't always stay up to date, but they don't completely disappear either.

I have this issue too, Windows XP guest on Windows 7 64-bit host. This happens with versions 4.2-4.2.6 but 4.1.24 works fine.

I'm unclear how to simply sign up for notifications on a ticket without simply posting a "me too" comment, but "me too". I'm running OS X 10.7.5 on my MBP, using Windows 7 (x64) as the guest, and have exactly this issue with all versions of 4.2. The latest 4.1.x release seems to work.
