#10953 new defect

Slow Guest Desktop

Reported by: oxoocoffee Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 4.2.0
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Mac OS X

Description

After upgrading to 4.2.0 by first uninstalling 4.1.22 guest tools, rebooting and installing 4.2.0 and rebooting clean, I see very slow desktop. Dragging any guest windows (Win7 x32) are lagging behind mouse. I know this is not a good measurement but on 4.1.x is was much much faster. Also dragging window around leaves dirty lines (from dragged window) on desktop all over. At some point it desktop will get refreshed. I try to get screenshot but whenever I try to get screenshot desktop is refreshed. When I mean drag window in circle motion mouse stops and window still is in motion following circle. I did try to uninstall guest tools. Reboot Guest and Host and nothing works. Host is Mt Lion 10.8.1

Did you select the "D3D support" component when installing Guest Additions, and if yes, did you install WDDM or XPDM-based (aka "Basic") D3D support?
In the former case did you have Aero theme running and does disabling it helps in any way?
Also, what does "nothing works" mean?
Please attach VM log files for your VM session exposing slowness and for the session where "nothing works".

I did not select D3D support when installing Guest Additions. Enable 3D Acceleration is UnChecked in guest settings Enable 2D Acceleration is Checked in guest settings Switching from Aero to Windows 7 Basic or Windows Classic does not improve anything reported. Still redraw problem and lagging. I am attaching log file with clean guest restart and after restart single window was dragged around to check lag and garbage screen update. Also in that same session I did switch from Aero to Classic and Windows 7 Basic. What I mean by "Nothing Works" is me trying to uninstall previous guest tools (from 4.1.22) then rebooting, then installing 4.2 guest tools and rebooting again.

Trying to localize the problem, does the issue happen if you're using 4.1.x additions with VBox 4.2 host installation?

I will be able to do so when I get 4.2 back and running again. After updating system to 10.8.2 (Mt Lion) I can't start vbox guest. VT-x is being used by another hypervisor - VERR_VMX_IN_VMX_ROOT_MODE

Also before System Update I noticed that my SolidState checkbox on vdi in settings was not preserved so was not TV-x was always on but unchecking it was not saved. When I closed vbox main screen and reopened it such setting was lost. Perhaps something else is going on that is not enabling 2D or some other setting? When new version of vbox comes out I will try what you asked me here

This bug affects me too, but only with Aero enabled. Windows 7 x86 guest was fast and responsive on VirtualBox 4.1.x. After installing VirtualBox 4.2.0, it became very slow. I'm using a Windows 7 x86-64 Host, Guest additions version 4.2.0; CPU Core 2 Quad Q9300, 8GB RAM, GPU Radeon HD 6570.

After trying to update to 4.2.2 I noticed this still is a problem. Going back to 4.1.23 made thing working again.

After upgrading to 4.2.6 problem still persists.

(maybe use git bisect to detect what caused the problem?)
