What do you mean by fails during install? Does the VM abort, do you see an error message from VirtualBox or from the guest? Also, please attach the VBox.log file of at least one failing VM session.

the error message occurred in a window called Genie Mediator which would then abort the boot up or in the case of a new install, the installation was aborted. the error occurred in the guest.

today, i removed all prior Virtual Box files and directories, removed all prior virtual machines, and did a fresh, clean install of Virtual Box 4.1.16 and extension pack. after that, i was able to successfully install and boot Ubuntu 64bit. will now attempt new Win7 install.

unfortunately, all prior files, including log files, were removed today when i did the fresh install.

host MAC OS has total of 16 gigs of RAM.

a critical error occurs on Win7 guest boot if the RAM for guest is set over 3,000 mb. RAM settings at 2600 mb and 2800 mb do not produce the error.

Genie Mediator interrupts the boot process with the following critical error message: A critical error has occurred while running the virtual machine and the machine execution has been stopped. For help, please see the Community section on http://www.virtualbox.org or your support contract. Please provide the contents of the log file VBox.log and the image file VBox.png, which you can find in the /Users//VirtualBox VMs/Win7 64bit/Logs directory, as well as a description of what you were doing when this error happened. Note that you can also access the above files by selecting Show Log from the Machine menu of the main VirtualBox window. Press OK if you want to power off the machine or press Ignore if you want to leave it as is for debugging. Please note that debugging requires special knowledge and tools, so it is recommended to press OK now.

Which version of OS X?

Possible cross reference 10.5.8 + 4.1.16 !r78094 = out of memory?
