Unicode Shared Folders: filenames broken
Reported by: | Technologov | Owned by: | |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | shared folders | Version: | VirtualBox 4.1.14 |
Keywords: | Unicode UTF-8 Encoding Language | Cc: | |
Guest type: | Linux | Host type: | Linux |
Description
Host: Debian 6.0 + VBox 4.1.14, x64. Host FS: NTFS-3G.
Guest: Debian 7.0/testing + GA 4.1.14.
I keep Russian-named filenames on host's NTFS-3G FS. They look & work correctly on both host OS (Linux) and Windows guests, but said files are looking wrong in Linux guest (mounted via VBoxSF).
Expected behavior: VBox shared folders must work correctly with Unicode.

Please make sure if you have correctly installed Unicode environment. Both Linux host and guest should have environment variable LANG=ru_RU.UTF8. Also please make sure if you have Unicode fonts installed.
I tried to list and create files in VBoxSF share linked to host's NTFS-3G FS mount point which contained Russian filenames (tried that in Slackware64-13.37). Everything looked good when I set LANG to correct value.
Please let us know if it helped.

Please also keep the semantics of LANG and LC_ALL in mind. LANG is the default which can be overwritten by other LC_ variables. LC_ALL has precedence over all other LC_ variables. So better use LC_ALL than LANG.
