REGRESSION: guest screen becomes black and is only partially redrawn block by block

Reported by: matteosistisette Owned by:
Priority: critical Component: other
Version: VirtualBox 4.1.14 Keywords:
Cc: Guest type: Windows
Host type: Linux

Description

Steps to reproduce:

  • start a virtual machine
  • minimize the vm's window
  • remaximize it

=> the guest screen is all black. Sometimes, by exitin fullscreen and resizing the window, the guest screen will redraw completely. Sometimes not and it will stay black By moving the mouse cursor in the guest, and clicking here and there, PARTS of the screen (always rectangular regions) are redrawn, but some parts remain black forever.

This is a regression in 4.1. It didn't happen in 3.x.

The provided information is not sufficient. Which guest is this, in particular, which Windows version? Which version of the VirtualBox Guest Additions did you install? Did you enable Direct 3D support and if so, did you select the new WDDM driver?

Please also attach a VBox.log file of this VM session.

I've seen this as well. It hasn't happened in a couple of days though. I'm also now seeing occasional full-screen redraws as I'm interacting with window controls. Almost like the driver thinks the screen resolution is changing. I'll try to capture a log.

I'm running Windows 7 with the WDDM driver. I just re-enabled it with 4.1.14 because of the SMP fixes that were made.

Edit: It now looks like the redraw is the WDDM driver switching off Aero Glass mode and then switching back.

Log attached. Getting a lot of "OpenGL Warning: Cleared gl error 0x500 on context creation".

I just had the screen redraw issue the OP describes after a host display resolution change. Here are the lines from the VBox.log:

It appears that the Windows DWM is crashing every time the refresh happens. Here's the entries from the Windows Application Event log:

The Desktop Window Manager has encountered a fatal error (0x8898009b) The Desktop Window Manager has exited with code (0x8898009b)

The last one seems to have disabled Aero completely.

Sorry, I didn't get any email notification of the updates in this bug report.

It's Windows 7 64bit guest on Ubuntu 11.10 host. VB 4.1.10 and the GuestAdditions which came with it; yes, with the new WDDM driver.

Is it possible that the cause of this issue is the same that is making everything so slow?

I am observing this behavior on Mac OS 10.6.8 host with Windows 7 64-bit and Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit guest OS. The problem only happens when the guest OS is displayed on the secondary screen. The contents of the guest window turn black when the focus is switched out of that window. I first noticed this after upgrading to 4.2.4 and installing the 4.2.4 guest additions.

I likewise have the exact same error.

  • host = Win 7 pro SP1. 64-bit
  • guest = Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit

Full screen works when on display 1. When I move to view it on display 2, then it blacks out completely. There are a few arbitrary spots where I can click and the screen will fade into existence again, but only for a bit before fading back to complete black with no response. I don't even see the mouse cursor. However, when I bring it back to not-full-screen, I can see that my keyboard and mouse clicks were taking effect, but I just couldn't see them.

Thr4wn, any change with VBox 4.3.8?
