Still a problem with the final Ubuntu 12.04 version? Unfortunately your processor does not support VT-x, because with VT-x enabled this definitely works.

Replying to frank:

I have tried the final version of 12.04, but I get the same problems both with Kubuntu and Ubuntu. I don't know what you mean with VT-x. The strange thing is that I installed the final version of Ubuntu on a pentium 4 laptop and that functions without problems. The problem lies within the installation in Virtualbox on my computer.

See here for an explanation of VT-x. In short: This is a processor technology which makes it easier to virtualize guests. It is also possible to run guests on processors which don't have this feature but this requires some more tricks and heuristics. I assume that your problem could be fixed but as most of the new processors are capable of VT-x (Intel) or AMD-V (AMD), we don't spent too much time into bug fixing of the code for older processors.
