Ubuntu 12.04 extremely slow both 32-bit & 64-bit

Reported by: Perry G Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 4.1.12
Keywords: sluggish, slow, boot, use Cc:
Guest type: Linux Host type: Linux

Description

Booting and using Ubuntu 12.04 as a guest is extremely slow. As host it appears to be snappy. Running from the latest compile from SVN with the GAs close behind. I am attaching the log from the latest boot of the 32-bit version and if you look at the times you will see what I am talking about. It takes close to 2 minutes just to get to the logon screen. Let me know if you want the log from the 64-bit.

This might be a problem with the non-VT-x emulation.

I have created a new Ubuntu 12.04 guest (32-bit) with the daily installation CD from yesterday. So far I could not reproduce this slow boot, neither with VT-x + nested paging enabled nor with VT-x disabled. This guest works quite normal here with VBox 4.1.12.

I have been testing this and it seams to be Ubuntu that is the worst. Not really sure yet but am working on isolating it down a bit more. It is worse on 64-bit with no VT-x, but I see it on 64-bit with VT-x as well. Hang in there with me.

Did you already try to disable 3D and run the guest with Unity2D instead?

Actually I installed 12.04 server 64-bit this weekend (minimal, expert mode) to test some lower level causes. So no audio, or 3D. First install on 64-bit with VT-x took over an hour. I installed again but turned on the pae flag and it then installed in about 15 minutes and I have no clue why.

I'll add more once I have something that makes sense.

Hmm, a 64-bit guest should not depend on the PAE flag at all...

Very true. I am starting to wonder if it is OS dependant. This is the first run where they "require" it but it should not effect 64-bit guests. That and multi-arch is driving me crazy. On metal they don't seem to be an issue but throw them in VM and things seem to blow up.

Adding my 2 cents: 1) HOST: Windows 7 SP1 32bit Ultimate 1a) Host HW: Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 (no virtualization), 4GB RAM 1b) Virtualbox 4.1.14 (tested also with 4.1.12)

2) Guest: Ubuntu 12.04 (Stable)

Guest Additions are installed.

Machine runs really really slow. Was running perfect BEFORE upgrading to 12.04.

I also have the same problem.

Host: Windows 7, CPU E5870 without VT-x Guest: Ubuntu 12.04

The vm is very slow while installing and running. Hope the fix could be released.

I have this problem, I tried switching to Unity 2D, and it's still a little bit sluggish.

I'm running a Windows 7 host 64-bit ultimate on an ASUS G51VX, and Ubuntu 12.04 as my guest.

I have 4GB RAM total on my machine and I'm using 2GB for the guest with Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P7350 @ 2.00GHz 2.00GHz

As far as I can tell my CPU supports VT-d but NOT VT-x

I can confirm this problem on 64 bit Win7 Pro host with Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 LTS 64 bit running in VBox VM.

GA installed.

Physical machine: 8 GB RAM Intel i7 CPU 250 GB SSD

Fairly new system.

Ubuntu 11.10 runs smooth in Vbox VM on the same hardware.

Please could you attach a VBox.log file of a VM session with an Ubuntu 12.04 guest?

I have experienced the same issue. Hopefully this will help narrow down the issue. HW: Samsung RF711 laptop (i7-2670QM, 8GB) HOST OS: MS Win 7 Home Premium, SP1, 64bit GUEST OS: Ubuntu Server 12.04.1 64 bit VirtualBox: 4.2.0

Interestingly, I installed the 32 bit version of Ubuntu Server 12.04.1 and it seemed to run ok

For me, the issue went away when I launched with 2 CPUs instead of 1 (and I had to also enable IO APIC). I'm attaching VBox.log as the "good" log and VBox.log.1 as the "bad" log.

enabling IO APIC resolved the issue with a sluggish VM I was having as well. Host: ubuntu 12.04, GUI version. Guest: 12.04 ubuntu server, no GUI.

Finally, after nearly a year of googling and tinkering with every setting, I hit on the thing that got my 12.04 running well. Just by chance. HW Virtualization wasn't enabled in BIOS. I enabled VT-x/Virtualization in BIOS, and 12.04 now zings along. I could cry, it runs so well.
