VirtualBox VM crashes on switch to Fullscreen after resume

Reported by: coreychch Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 4.1.8

Guest type: Windows Host type: Mac OS X

Description

Using a Windows 7 Ultimate Guest OS, the VM crashes if you switch to fullscreen after it has been resumed from a paused state. If the Guest OS VM has been 'freshly booted', fullscreen works fine.

Discussion on forums is here, and attempts to remedy the problem: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=48431

VBox.log attached from when fullscreen was activated and it failed.

I am running a win 7 host and fedora guest and am experiencing a similar problem. A few more differences.

  • this problem started occurring after getting dual monitors, previously never had a problem.
  • will occur regularly, as in every single time I switch fullscreen mode but then after a few times of crashing, it will become stable for a few days at a stretch
  • will occur both entering and leaving full screen mode
  • generally can't do work now without saving before I switch fullscreen mode as I don't want to chance losing it.
  • video memory, mentioned in discussion, is at maximum. If it matters, running 1920*1200 & 2560*1440 monitors

log has been attached.

This still happens in VBox 4.2.10 - Kubuntu host, Windows 7 VM. I can full screen Windows XP, Windows 8, and various linux distros. I am able to full screen before it boots to the desktop, but once at the desktop - entering or leaving full screen causes the virtualbox to crash. I have 256 mb of video ram added to the vm (but I have tried 32, 64, 128 as well)

I am also running dual displays, 3d acceleration enabled (had to boot into safe mode to install the video drivers, but problem was both before and after I did that)

When I am running only 1 display the problem does not occur.

However, when 2D acceleration is enabled the problem does not occur, which was disabled by default.

Same problem is happening to me on virtualbox 4.2.16, host is Windows 7 + SP1, Guest operating system is Mac OS Mountain Lion.

Reproduce problem:
1- After starting virtual machine, I click CTRL + F, to go to full screen mode.
2- Do some stuff.
3- Exit full screen mode by clicking CTRL + F.
4- When I try to enter the guest OS again, I can't see the mouse disappear, and I figure that the whole guest OS is hanged.

Similar problem here on Virtual box 4.3.6, host is Win 7 and guest OS is Win XP SP3.

To reproduce the problem , for me it doesn't matters if the VM starts fresh of being resume. My routine is I usually use the VM in dual display mode and when I want to take my laptop to debug a machine I exits full screen as I will need to unplug the monitor.

After doing work I plug back in the monitor and wish to goes full screen again but it will certainly crash and my guest OS will restart. After it restarts it will be ok to toggle full screen but not if I repeat the steps above all again.

Do let me know if you need extra information on this, I really hope this will get fix as there is no way to tell when I will forget to save my work before I goes full screen. I hope that will never happen.
