I get the same problem on a Windows 7 64-bit host and Linux (Ubuntu 64) guests intermittently. It seems to happen when waking up the host after hibernation. The processor is an i7-2600 (with VT-x support) and this is happening with the latest version of VirtualBox (4.1.12-77218). Rebooting the host allows it to work again (having lost the state of the guests, though).

Sounds like there is some other application which is using the VMX root mode. Either an application which runs in XP compatibility mode (Windows' builtin VirtualPC is used for this mode) or just another VMM. This wouldn't work while VirtualBox is running.
