HostMemoryLow - Memory leak?

Reported by: Lou Emar Owned by:
Component: guest control Version: VirtualBox 4.0.16
Keywords: HostMemoryLow Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description

My host is a Sony Vaio laptop with Windows 64 bit Professional - 8GB RAM. I've been working with Virtualbox for months with no problems. I recently installed 4.0.18 also. Suddenly last week I started to get HostMemoryLow error. I get it for VMs exceeding 3GB of RAM. Moreover, if a VM is configured for 3GB and I run another (e.g. an Active Directory server), the AD server gives the error (the AD server is just 385MB RAM, but brings the total RAM used by Virtualbox over the apparent limit of 3GB). I tried to re-install Virtualbox, I tried to go back to 4.0.16. I run my antivirus and I found a MALJAVA trojanhorse, that the virus eliminated. I re-installed JAVA just to make sure.

the puzzling thing is that I also use VMware on the same laptop. While all this testing was going on with Virtualbox I could run VMware VMs to up to 5GB without an hitch.

Please help.

Fantastic!!!

Killing GoogleCrashHandler64 fixes the problem.

Booh to Google, of course (also because this is based to a change that wasn't explicit notified). On the other hand I wonder why VMware could still work. Maybe there is a lesson here for the friends of Virtualbox? Please note that I much prefer Virtualbox to VMware for workstation type of applications. Lou
