Yes, currently there's a bug in VirtualBox (you forgot the keyword 
"bridged" in the above description) related to network offloading 
(checksumming, segmentation) which leads to corrupted packets when 
echanging data between host and guest (but not with other systems on the 
LAN). What you posted is a workaround which kicks things into the proper 
state.

We're on it already, but it's a non-trivial issue.
