[vbox-dev] is Merging cancellable?

wonder if the virtual disk files are still consistent if a merging task is stopped in between? 
 
During merge, does child disk gets updated when a portion is merged to base? if so, then the merge can stop at any time, and base/child would be still valid?
 
or child is discarded as whole? thus merging task can not be cancelled?
