VDE is not dog slow. I was able to achieve 170 Mbp/s over VDE.

This is far from good for servers, but it is good for network simulations.
vs 240 Mbp/s for "Bridged" mode.

yes.
Also: if you think there is any need for many "host-only" networks, we
can discuss it.
