Yes, that will work, provided the drive letter and directory hierarchy keep exactly same on different PCs, because absolute paths are used in those xml files.
 
And still, if just want to move a single vm, this is not the solution.
 
Often the time, I need to give a vm to my collegues, right now, basically, we just move the virtual disk file, and re-create the vm on a different pc. Never easy to copy the .xml files.

Well, I might misunderstand your reasons for testing, but I think the
simplest way (on a unix host) is to create a symlink named ~/.VirtualBox
that points to an appropriate directory on your eSATA disk.(I'm assuming
that each test machine has vbox already installed.)

I've never run vbox on a Windows host but I'm guessing that there is a
similar subdirectory somewhere in your 'Documents Folder' or near it.
