Thanks for the clarification.
 
So we could use even .vdi format. I was trying to find out a format to generate by p2v tool, then import on another pc. Modified OVF seems to be the way to go.

OVF is a very broad spec, it doesn't say much about the things that the OVF files refer to. You can put in whatever container format you like. It just happens that streaming VMDK are most suitable because they are compressed.

I wanted to use it from original place, for example, P2V vm is 250G in size for my laptop, importing will take very long time. 

A simple question, is compression optional? or is it mandatory by spec? I noticed Citrix uses uncompressed VHD for OVF disk.

I think they support random reads but not random writes. So using a snapshot on them, it could work.

Volunteers to implement that? Huihong?
