What does that mean: Do the guest additions don't install cleanly or
is the NIC not detected?

You may want to remove the disabled Vista PCNet driver from the device
manager and reboot your Vista guest. Then it should ask you for a
driver. If the guest additions were properly installed you should be
able to select the PCnet driver.
