#1501 closed defect (fixed)

very high cpu utilisation if usb 2.0 is enabled

Reported by: strangebird Owned by:
Component: USB Version: VirtualBox 1.6.0

Guest type: other Host type: other

Description

After upgrading from VirtualBox 1.5.6 to 1.6.0 on a Mandriva 2007.1 host, I noticed that the cpu utilisation for the VirtualBox process was near 80% when the guest OS (Windows 2000 Professional) was running - although the guest OS showed an utilisation of less than 10%. Before upgrading I was used to an cpu utilisation for the VirtualBox process of less than 15% (guest cpu utilisation + maximum of 5%). Disabling the usb 2.0 option gives again an cpu utilisation of 15%.

We are aware of that problem though it depends a bit on the guest system. We will try to fix it in future releases.

i have the exact same problem on an ubuntu 7.10 host . Same version, same guest os, same usb option, etc....

I'm using a hp 6820s, C2D 7250 2GHZ 2GB Ram .

uname gives :

Linux 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Tue Feb 12 02:46:46 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

BTW, i use vbox since 1.52, nice product, very stable for me.

I an confirm this problem on Arch Linux 2007.08-2. CPU usage on VirtualBox 1.5.6 used to be around 4-10%. On VirtualBox 1.6.0 and 1.6.2, CPU usage is around 50-55%.

This problem still occurs on VirtualBox 2.0.0. CPU usage is around 50%.

Operating System: Arch Linux 2008.06. uname -a: Linux server 2.6.26-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Sep 9 10:15:21 UTC 2008 i686 Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

The problem still ocurrs on VirtualBox 2.0.4 on Linux. In my case the guest is Win XP Professional. CPU usage is around 50% for one of the cores. As previously reported it only ocurrs when an USB device is attached.

Linux nvs 2.6.22.9-nas #9 SMP Wed Feb 13 17:22:41 AST 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This problem no longer occurs on VirtualBox 2.1.4 using Arch Linux 2009.02. CPU utilisation seems to now be less than VirtualBox 1.5.6 (last version before VirtualBox 2.1.4 to not have this issue).

uname -a: Linux server 2.6.28-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Feb 13 10:23:36 UTC 2009 i686 Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
