Is this still true? In VBox 5.2.6, I am finding that deleting a snapshot fails to do that.

If that is correct, you should open a new bug report for it. I suggest though that you take it to the forums[1] first in case it is simply a user mistake.

I'm not exactly clear about what you want here. The "Discard snapshot" feature merges the snapshot disk image into the parent disk image.
