The display hint setting is for restricting the maximum size of resolution a guest can set. X11 guests ignore this entirely as all resolutions except the very first one are requested by the user, and I assume that if the user asks for something then they know what they want.

Just testing a fix for remembering modes across shut-downs between old and new Additions - after thinking about this a bit, I concluded that although it would ideally only affect every user once, that still adds up to quite a number of times.
Michael,
If I understand you correctly, yes remembering modes across shutdowns
seems to work.

I may misunderstand the purpose of the Display>Hint setting in the
VirtualBox preferences. Does that only work when you are first creating
a guest? I ask because changing the resolution makes no difference after
the guest is created.
Hello Louis,

Hint handling was actually one of the things which should be fixed.
Remembering saved modes is not compatible between old and new
Additions (I could have fixed that, but normally it will only be
needed once, when you upgrade, so I preferred to keep the code
simple and hopefully reliable), as the new mechanism works for all
guest screens and not just the first one, and saves more
information. Expect that to change again once in the near future
though I'm afraid.

Does remembering modes work when you shut down and start up again
with new Additions?

Thanks and regards,
Apparently the "Hint" preference was fixed because now if I set the
Display Hint in VirtualBox to 1920x1080 it actually opens to
that size.
Hint never worked before.
The problem I had yesterday is fixed. I didn't try to
recreate the
new one. I haven't noticed any thing different except, I
actually
installed the test build for OSX instead of just the GAs.
Something
that has changed is, the guests no longer remember what
size they
were when shutdown. Normally I have all guests set to
1920x1080 and
when I start them they opened to that size. Now they don 't.
Second try<1>, hopefully with the first regression
fixed. I have
already found one new one myself: I started a terminal,
switched to
seamless mode, switched to a virtual terminal and back and
cancelled the
switch back to seamless. Result: the second guest
screen was
set to a
0x0 resolution (checked with xrandr) and blacked out.

All additional testing is welcome, I will fix my regression
tomorrow and
any others (if there are any, which is quite likely) as
fast as
I can as
they are reported!
Thanks!
